UNIVERSITY of the East fights for dear life when it faces Ateneo on Sunday in the UAAP Season 76 men’s basketball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena.
A victory will keep the Warriors semifinal hopes alive, but a loss will eliminate UE from the Final Four picture.
The Red Warriors, in sixth place with a 5-6 win-loss record, face the Blue Eagles, who hold a 6-5 card, at 2 p.m.
Despite a three-game skid, UE coach Boycie Zamar remains confident.
“There are still three games,” said Zamar. “We are not out. We have to do fine tuning again. Eto ’yung realidad.”
“Lahat importante, last three games. So puwedeng sumabit kami sa Final Four, sasabit kami. Kung kailangan ng playoff, we will do it,” he said.
Big man Charles Mammie returned to action against La Salle last Wednesday after the UAAP board downgraded his suspension from two games to one. However, the Red Warriors still lost in overtime, 65-75.
“We are complete. But we have to be cohesive. It’s all about mental toughness right now,” said Zamar.
Ateneo coach Bo Perasol, meanwhile, will not be on the bench for the game as he was suspended by the UAAP board for a post-game spat with a La Salle fan during the Blue Eagles’ 64-66 loss to the Green Archers last September 1.
The Blue Eagles are aching to come back from their 64-66 loss to La Salle last September 1.
