WITH University of the East one defeat away from elimination, Bong Galanza stepped up to keep the Red Warriors’ Final Four hopes alive.
The UE team captain played the best game of his collegiate career scoring 26 points in leading the Red Warriors to a 94-71 win over Far Eastern University on Sunday for their seventh win in 12 outings.
His performance for the Red Warriors on Sunday earned him the UAAP Press Corps-Accel Quantum Plus/3XVI Player of the Week honors.
“Ginawa ko lang ’yung best ko,” said Galanza. “Lagi kaming pinu-push ni coach na huwag mag-relax dahil hindi pa kami out. Kailangan naming mag-work hard.”
Galanza bested Jeron Teng of La Salle and Alfred Aroga of National University for the weekly honor also supported by Bactigel Hand Sanitizer, Mighty Mom Dishwashing and Dr. J Rubbing Alcohol.
When asked about his play against FEU, Galanza said he was only trying to contribute in any way he can.
“As a team captain, kailangan na kami ang mag-lead by example. ’Yung mga teammates ko rin naman, binigay rin naman nila ’yung best nila,” said Galanza, who already had 15 points in the first half to lead UE to a 44-37 halftime edge.
But UE coach Derrick Pumaren said Galanza was just one of the Red Warriors who played a big role in the huge victory over the league-leader.
“I must commend that it was really a team effort. We played as a team defensively. We tried to stop and contain FEU and that’s what we did,” said Pumaren.
The Red Warriors are in fifth place in the standings, with games against La Salle on Wednesday and University of Santo Tomas on September 16.
“Naghahabol pa rin kami. We just have to take control of our destiny,” said Pumaren.
