THE University of Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) will open its 76th season earlier than usual to give way to the country’s hosting of the FIBA-Asia Men’s Championship this August.
The collegiate league starts the new season with the centerpiece event of basketball on June 29 at the Mall of Asia Arena, according to Malou Isip, athletic director of incoming host Adamson.
The UAAP usually kicks off its season in the second week of July, but decided to move the opening to an early date as the league will suspend its schedule for the duration of the FIBA-Asia showpiece set August 1 to 11.
The early start assures that basketball competition will be over by October, at the latest.
The move was in support to the call by Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas president Manny V. Pangilinan for all college basketball leagues to suspend play in support of the country’s first hosting of the Asian championships since 1973.
UAAP games are usually played every Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday. Hence, six playing dates will be affected during the hosting of the Fiba-Asia tournament.
Isip said the league will play the men’s basketball games at the Mall of Asia Arena and the Smart Araneta Coliseum, respectively.
