ARNOLD Van Opstal of De La Salle has been summoned by the UAAP Commissioner’s Office on Wednesday over allegations that he punched Ateneo’s Fonzo Gotladera during their match on Sunday.
UAAP commissioner Andy Jao said he has invited Van Opstal to explain his side on the matter before Wednesday’s game pitting the Green Archers against National University at 4 p.m. at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Jao admitted he has spotted a few physical plays during Sunday's game which the Blue Eagles won, 97-86, but still needs a thorough review of the game tape with his deputies before coming up with a decision.
“I’ll discuss that with my deputies and my technical supervisor before I make a decision,” said Jao. “I will ask my people to bring ‘yung sariling tapes on the matter.”
Van Opstal has been accused of throwing a punch or an elbow to the back of the head of Gotladera during a rebound play at the 7:38 mark of the first quarter. No call was made by the three game officials.
Interestingly, Van Opstal and Gotladera are former teammates before the latter transferred to Ateneo.
Jao said he has yet to receive an official correspondence from Ateneo regarding the incident although a source said the Blue Eagles have already informed one of his deputies about the matter.
Jao, however, said he won’t speculate on whether there will be possible suspensions or any sanctions awaiting Van Opstal since no call was made on the play in the first place.
Under UAAP rules, two accumulated unsportsmanlike fouls or one disqualifying foul will result in an automatic one-game suspension. Van Opstal has yet to be given any unsportsmanlike fouls this season.
