WITH the way National University and De La Salle have been playing, their Sunday encounter might not be their last for this season as the streaking teams collide in the UAAP Season 76 men’s basketball tournament at the MOA Arena.
The Bulldogs and the Green Archers battle at 4 p.m. in a battle between teams that have gone undefeated in the second round and could meet in the Final Four.
NU has risen to first spot with a 9-3 win-loss slate following a six-game streak, the most recent win a 79-62 victory over University of the Philippines last Wednesday.
The Green Archers, meanwhile, have won all five of their second round games for an 8-4 win-loss record.
But NU coach Eric Altamirano said that he doesn’t see the game as a possible Final Four or even a finals preview.
“We can’t really say because the standings are really tight right now,” said Altamirano.
Altamirano said that there is still no reason to slack off as, aside from La Salle, NU will still play Ateneo on September 11.
“Hindi kami puwede mag-rest on our laurels. We humbly take the top position but we have to work hard to achieve our goal,” he said.
La Salle actually has a shot at the twice-to-beat advantage but head coach Juno Sauler said it’s far from their mindset.
The Green Archers also have a tough schedule as they finish the eliminations with a September 14 match against Final Four contender University of Santo Tomas.
“We still have two tough games. We are just focused on the game at hand, same mindset, same mental toughness,” said Sauler.
