San Beda spoils former Red Cub Caracut's big debut for La Salle with OT victory

    Apr 25, 2015

BASER Amer scored 26 points, Art Dela Cruz took over for San Beda in overtime, and the Red Lions spoiled a fine performance by La Salle rookie Andrei Caracut by pulling an 86-80 overtime victory on Saturday in the Filoil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup at The Arena in San Juan.

Amer and Dela Cruz started an 8-0 run by the NCAA champion Red Lions in the extra period on their way to the big debut against the defending champions, who survived in regulation thanks to a clutch three-point play by Jeron Teng.

Dela Cruz, who finished with 14 points, nine rebounds, and three assists, put the final touches to the victory with a jumper that gave the Red Lions a commanding 84-76 lead with 2:44 left in overtime.

The Red Lions survived a big game from Caracut, who waxed hot for the Green Archers in his first game against his former school. The former Red Cubs star scored 22 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the three-point region including a perfect 5-of-5 in the first half.

“I want to give credit where credit is due. You have to give credit to La Salle because we were ahead at the half. It shows what kind of program they have. But because of our familiarity, we were able to pull it out,” said new San Beda head coach Jamike Jarin.

“We were careless… We are not yet good at our system. I blame myself for it. As their head coach, I should be on top of everything,” Jarin added.
