Roi Sumang respects coach Derrick Pumaren's decision to bench him in early goings of UE's playoff loss vs NU

ROI Sumang is not questioning the decision of University of the East coach Derrick Pumaren to use him sparingly in the early goings of the Warriors’ 49-51 loss to National University in their playoff for the last berth in the UAAP Final Four Saturday.

The King Warrior played the whole fourth quarter and scored 13 of his 19 points to lead his team’s fightback that just fell short.

But Sumang came off the bench and played just 10 minutes the first three quarters, where the Warriors saw themselves on the back foot.

“It’s coach’s decision. I respect naman sila coach,” the flamboyant fourth-year guard said after the game. “Wala naman akong (reklamo) sa kanila.”

“Siguro ‘yun yung mas better para sa amin,” added Sumang, who averaged 24.1 minutes in 12 games in the elimination round. “Kaya mas better din sa akin ‘yun.”

What the Warriors, according to Sumang, can do better is to have a much solid start, unlike this year where they lost two of their first six games, before ending their season winning seven of their last eight games, including a five-game winning streak to end the eliminations and force the playoff for the last Final Four spot with the Bulldogs.

“Sa start pa lang (ng season), kailangan manalo na,” Sumang said. “Ang hirap mag-habol. Siguro next year, mas maganda na ang start namin.”
