Tamaraws' failure to keep emotions in check factored in Game Two loss to NU, admits Mac Belo

    Oct 9, 2014

MAC Belo admitted excitement got the better of Far Eastern University when the Tamaraws lost Game Two of the UAAP Finals to National University Bulldogs.

Belo said the Tamaraws got too emotional in their title quest especially after winning the opener of the best-of-three series last week.

The end result had them trailing the Bulldogs early in the first quarter, 16-3, a deficit too big for them to overcome on their way to losing the match, 62-47.

The loss sent the best-of-three title series to a deciding Game Three on Wednesday.

“Na-excite,” Belo readily admitted when asked about the reason for the team’s slow start. “Kahit sino naman, kung ahead ka ng one game sa kanila, ma-eexcite siguro lahat.”

FEU coach Nash Racela acknowledged the Tamaraws’ inability to keep their emotions in check in the all-important Game Two, resulting in their failure to keep pace with the Bulldogs’ aggressive play.

“On our part, we had to manage ‘yung emotions nila kasi gusto nilang manalo na talaga. I think that is something na hindi namin successfully nagawa kasi magulo kami sa start that is why they had a big lead,” said Racela.

Belo had a relatively good Game Two as he scored 17 points coming off the bench.

The Mythical Five member, however, only shot 5-of-13 from the field against a potent NU defense that was all over him, something which he had expected.

“Aggressive sila,” Belo said of the Bulldogs’ defense. “Na-limit nila kami.”

“Na-anticipate na namin na magiging aggressive sila dahil do-or-die na para sa kanila. Bad start talaga kami,” Belo said.

The soft-spoken forward also said his role coming off the bench wasn’t a factor in his bad shooting day in Game Two as he welcomes any assignment Racela will give to him.

“Depende naman ‘yun kay coach. Malaki ang tiwala ko kay coach. It’s all about team naman eh,” he said.
