RR GARCIA appears leaning toward returning to Far Eastern University for his fifth and final year in Season 76 of the UAAP.
Multiple sources close to the FEU star said Garcia is likely to suit up for the Tamaraws one last time, pointing out that the hiring of Nash Racela as head coach of the team factored a lot in the former league MVP's decision to stay.
The 2010 UAAP MVP, you see, is also a member of the Smart Gilas cadet training pool where Racela serves as one of the deputies of head coach Chot Reyes.
According to sources, Garcia has also been showing up in FEU practices even though he plays for the NLEX Road Warriors in the PBA D-League during this UAAP offseason.
Contacted by Spin.ph, Garcia remained non-committal about his future with the Morayta-based school that has served as a breeding ground for some of the finest point guards in Philippine basketball.
“Wala pa akong desisyon,” said Garcia.
In the likely event that Garcia stays on, the Tamaraws will have enough manpower for a run at another championship as they will also be having back last season’s Mythical Five awardee Terrence Romeo.
Already an accomplished collegiate basketball player, the 22-year-old Garcia is also considering joining the PBA rookie draft this year.
In a previous interview, Garcia admitted the possibility of winning an championship in his final year season with the school is what will likely compel him to stay with the Tamaraws.
“Kailangan ko kasi mag-champion kaya pwede pa rin talaga ako bumalik,” said the Zamboanga-native.
Despite winning the MVP plum in just his sophomore year, the UAAP crown has eluded Garcia twice after the Tamaraws settled for runner-up finishes during the 2010 and 2011 seasons behind five-time champion Ateneo Blue Eagles.
