Players - not refs - should decide outcome, says Jarencio

    Oct 2, 2012

UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas coach Pido Jarencio on Tuesday issued a call for fair officiating when the Tigers and the Ateneo Blue Eagles battle for the UAAP basketball crown.

Jarencio believes his team got the raw end of bum calls in a couple of games during the elimination round and he now hopes no bad calls would mar the best-of-three championship series that starts on Saturday at the Mall of Asia Arena.

“Sana fair decision sa officiating,” said Jarencio, issuing the call to the league's Commissioner's Office. “Let the players decide the game.”

Jarencio openly criticized the officiating following the Tigers’ 68-66 loss to Ateneo last September 15, a game UST later put under protest. The protest was denied by Commissioner Ato Badolato.

The Tigers claimed the referees were wrong to call a goaltending violation on Karim Abdul that resulted in a crucial three-point play by Ryan Buenafe. They also protested the referees' failure to call a technical foul on Ateneo coach Norman Black.

Jarencio said he has moved on following the controversy but reiterated his call for a fair officiating of the finals series.

“On our part sa UST, nakakita lang kami ng technicality pero tapos na ’yun at na-desisyunan na ’yun. Back to zero tayo, pero sa akin lang, dapat maging fair ang trato sa lahat. Sila (players) ang dapat mag-decide ng game kasi sila naman ang pinapanood dito,” said Jarencio.

Ateneo team manager Paolo Trillo, meanwhile, would rather not delve on the issue.

“Tapos na ‘yun, alam mo na kapag finals, it’s a different story. Back to zero ‘yung team,” said Trillo.
