FOR couple Whamos Del Rosario and Arcie Abin, the September 1 contest between University of Santo Tomas and Far Eastern University will be the most memorable UAAP game of their lives.
And it’s not just because the double-overtime thriller was won by their alma mater UST.
Del Rosario proposed to Abin, his girlfriend of 10 years, during the Tigers’ 79-78 double-overtime victory over the Tamaraws on Sunday afternoon at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Abin said yes.
Cheers broke out in the UST side of the gallery when a friend of Del Rosario’s friend unfurled a poster that said, “Arcie, will you watch UAAP with Whamos kahit 80 na kayo?” during the break between the third and fourth quarters.
Del Rosario, a 30-year-old certified public accountant, said he had been planning the proposal since the start of the season. His original plan, however, hit a snag when the game he had initially picked was called off due to heavy rains caused by ‘Maring.’
“Actually, months ago, bago mag-start ng season, mina-map out ko na kung paano gawin. Ang original plan ko is August 21 versus Ateneo but it was postponed. So I went to Plan B,” Del Rosario bared to Spin.ph.
Del Rosario said that he, Abin and their friends regularly watch UST games in the UAAP. In fact, Del Rosario said he had missed just one Tigers game since 2006, so it was but fitting to propose to his girlfriend during a UAAP game in the company of friends.
“It’s the right time because nandito pa ‘yung mga friends ko. Some will go abroad so this is the right time to do this,” said Del Rosario.
“This is our bonding activity. Magkasama kami sa UAAP. Kahit may problema, we are still together kaya dito ko naisip na mag-propose,” he said.
Minutes prior to his proposal, Del Rosario admitted he became very nervous.
“Actually na-feel ko na ‘yung kaba nung malapit na. Nung last two minutes na, dun ko na na-feel. Buti na lang nandito ‘yung mga kaibigan ko. They all gave inputs,” Del Rosario said.
Del Rosario said he picked the gap entering the fourth because the UST crowd is usually at its loudest during that juncture.
“Parang sa UST, napapansin ko, kahit lamang ang kalaban o hindi, kapag start ng fourth, pinu-pump up nila ang crowd so I thought that it was the perfect time to propose,” Del Rosario said.
Abin, also a CPA who works as a SAP consultant, said she had no inkling that her boyfriend will make the proposal, admitting she was so stunned he mind went blank with the entire crowd's attention focused on them.
“Wala talaga akong idea. Even before, hindi naman siya nagpaparamdam,” said Abin, 28. “Blangko. Lahat ng tao kasi nakatingin sa amin. Sobrang na-touch ako sa ginawa niya.”
The couple said that they plan to get married in early 2015.
