BO Perasol has put himself out of the race for the Ateneo coaching job next season after being released from the three-year contract he had signed with the school.
The decision was made after Perasol met with Ateneo president Jose Ramon Villarin on Monday, according to Ateneo team manager Paolo Trillo. The decision was mutual, he added.
“In the words of Fr. Jet (Villarin), they have mutually agreed to release each other from the obligations of the contract,” Trillo told Spin.ph.
Perasol had signed the contract with the blessing of businessman Manny Pangilinan, who has since cut his ties with the school and withdrew his support for the basketball program.
The former Powerade coach later issued a statement on Tuesday, saying: “While I am truly grateful for the trust of Ateneo in me, there was really no doubt in my mind as to who my Patron and Benefactor is — and that is MVP.
“I believe that our mutual agreement to release each other from our contract is what’s best for all concerned. I wish Ateneo well.”
With Perasol out, Ateneo assistant coach Sandy Arespacochaga now looms as the top candidate for the position vacated by Norman Black after leading the Eagles to five straight UAAP titles.
Trillo, however, made it clear that nothing is final yet.
“Coach Sandy is one of the prime candidates for the position. I know nothing has been decided but definitely, he is one of the guys that we are looking at,” said Trillo.
