AS the National University Cheerdance Squadron rose to prominence after winning a maiden UAAP title, one lithe woman has gotten most of the attention.
NU's trending star is none other than Claire Cristobal, an accountancy student who earned the 'elastic woman' tag when she wowed the crowd at the SM Mall of Asia, as well as millions of televiewers, on Sunday with her acrobatic and bone-twisting stunts.

So impressive was Cristobal’s performance in the stunts competition that even popular comedian Vice Ganda posted the picture of the NU star flyer on his Instagram account with a caption that says: “This girl from NU made my day. I love her! I want her on GGV.”
True enough, Cristobal is now getting ready to guest in the comedian's top-rating weekly comedy show, Gandang Gabi Vice, which will be taped Wednesday and aired on Sunday night.
But despite the instant celebrity, Cristobal insisted that she is but one part of a team.
“Part lang naman po ako ng team, nagkataon lang po na ako ang gumawa nung stunt,” said Cristobal, whose team was supported by MacroLPG.
The 5-7 lass from Malolos, Bulacan even admitted that she was the third choice for the role and only got the part when one member was stricken off the team owing to a technicality, and another got injured.
“Opo, third choice lang po ako dun. Galing lang po ako sa Team B,” said Cristobal, who was discovered by NU during the 2012 Palarong Pambansa in Lingayen, Pangasinan where she represented Central Luzon.
“Naalis po kasi yung isa dahil sa technicality tapos na-injure pa yung isang member ng Team A, yung nag-perform kanina sa cheerdance,” she bared. “Kaya ako ang pinalit!’
“Naghintay lang po talaga ako ng pagkakataon, at ibinigay naman po ng Diyos,” she added.
Meanwhile, NU assistant coach Gabby Bajacan shared that Cristobal’s success truly represents the Bulldogs' rise to prominence from the league’s perennial underdogs to the new top dogs.
“Ipinakita ni Claire na kahit gaano pa kabigat ang kumpetisyon, basta’t andoon ang pangarap mong magtagumpay, magagawa mo kahit imposible,” said Bajacan.
Asked if Cristobal is the best gymnast in the team, Bajacan issued a statement that could well serve as warning to other UAAP squads.
“She is just one of our best gymnasts, pero madami pa rin kami sa team," Bajacan said. "Madami pa kaming Claire sa pool.”
