Interim Adamson coach Mike Fermin says he was asked to stay on by Duremdes

    Jun 9, 2015

MIKE Fermin has vowed to complete unfinished business left behind by former head coach Kenneth Duremdes after he was appointed interim mentor of the Adamson Falcons in the coming UAAP season.

Adamson management decided to part ways with Duremdes last week after what the school felt was the lack of commitment on the part of the former King Falcon, who was originally signed to a three-year contract.

The sudden exit of the former PBA great and the resignation of deputy Marlou Aquino suddenly thrust Fermin into the hot seat, barely three months before Season 78 of the collegiate league gets underway.

“Nagbilin lang siya (Duremdes) sa akin. Sabi niya, ‘Coach, if ever they’re going to make you the interim, grab it. Don’t worry about me,'” shared Fermin.

The rookie mentor admitted he wanted to leave, too, when Duremdes was fired, but was prevailed upon by the one-time PBA MVP to stay.

“I told him kasi na, ‘Coach, you were the one who brought me here so sama-sama.' Pero the good man that he is, he said, ‘Hindi, hindi, you stay there and take care of the players,'” he added.

Fermin stressed he’ll just continue the program and system Duremdes had started.

“The system is there. Binigay naman na niya, we just have to polish it,” he said. “That’s why he told me nga na, ‘Dyan ka iwan ka, bantayan mo ‘yan, meron tayong systema, may mga recruits tayo alagaan natin.'"

But Fermin was mum about the issue concerning Adamson and Duremdes, whose coaching stint with the Falcons saw the school register only a single win in last year’s UAAP season.

“As for that, 'yun ang statement ng school. Si coach (Kenneth) may sarili rin siyang statement. Let’s leave it that way na lang,” he said.

“I’m not in the position to say baka magkagulo pa eh. It’s better left na lang na ganoon ‘yung statement ng school and statement ni coach Kenneth and then let the other people judge na lang. Huwag na lang tayo,” he added.
