Marlou Aquino appeals to Adamson to take it easy on transferring son Matthew

    Jun 6, 2015

CAGE great Marlou Aquino hopes Adamson won’t take personally his son Matthew's plan to transfer to another school in light of the recent coaching changes that transpired within the Falcons’ camp.

Spin.ph broke the news Friday about the young Aquino’s impending withdrawal from the team following the firing of head coach Kenneth Duremdes.

Duremdes and the elder Aquino are close friends and were once teammates with the Falcons in the early 90s. The 6-foot-9 Aquino himself already filed his resignation as Adamson assistant coach last Thursday.

“Actually, dapat internal ang lahat eh. Kaso ayan nga lumabas sa inyo (Spin.ph), kaya panalangin ko huwag naman sana maka-apekto sa hinihingi naming release kay Matt,” said Aquino, who dreads seeing his son suffer the fate as former Far Eastern University Baby Tamaraw Jerie Pingoy who had to sit out two UAAP seasons after failing to secure a release following his transfer to Ateneo.

Under UAAP rules, a player still has to take a one-year residency before being allowed to suit up for his new school even if he is released by his former team.

Aquino admitted his son's plan to transfer was prompted by the recent coaching changes within Adamson. But lest he be misunderstood, Marlou said the Aquinos have nothing against the San Marcelino-based school.

Likewise, Aquinor made it clear he won’t be seeking any coaching position on where school his son is heading.

Gusto ko lang siyang bigyan ng magandang environment, yung hindi siya tensyunado,” said the big man selected as the top overall pick by Ginebra in the 1996 Draft.

O mailang yung coach. Kasi siyempre, anak ko. Mga ganun ba,” Aquino added.

The pride of Sta. Barbara, Pangasinan also hopes the development won’t stunt the growth of his son’s career, saying Matt is only after fulfilling his dreams.

Kaya sana huwag nating hadlangan 'yung pangarap ng bata,” he said.

Aquino stressed he has already pulled out Matthew from the Falcons.

“Wala na talaga siya sa team. Yung di niya paglalaro kahapon, yun na yun (inalis ko na siya sa team),” he said.

Asked if his son is indeed, headed to National University, the former Adamson stalwart shook his head.

Wala pang pormalidad ang lahat,” he said.
