Mac Belo deflects credit, says Roger Pogoy stop on Wong layup the key to FEU victory

    Nov 21, 2015

MAC Belo said this year’s buzzer-beating game-winner against Ateneo in the Final Four of UAAP Season 78 was much sweeter compared to the three-pointer at the buzzer that he hit against La Salle last year.

"This year,” he said when asked about the two-game winners, shortly after Far Eastern University's 76-74 win on Saturday that put a sad end to Kiefer Ravena and the Blue Eagles' season.

Asked why, the former national player explained that his last game winner gave the Tamaraws another shot at a title - and a chance to atone for last year's loss to National University in the finale.

“Kasi may chance na uli kami,” he said.

FEU coach Nash Racela said he fully understoodBelo’s choice, sayingall  the players have been trained not to dwell in the past and instead live in the present.

“Trained sila to forget what’s behind him. Lagi kaming pushing forward,” said Racela, who even admitted that he didn’t know until after the game that it was Belo who made the game-winner.

“Akala ko si Raymar Jose ‘yung naka-shoot. Hindi ko alam tapos tumakbo na ako to shake hands (with Ateneo) tapos si Mac pala,” said Racela.

Belo, however, deflected the credit for the victory, saying the defensive stop by Roger Pogoy in the final seconds that prevented Adrian Wong from hitting a layup was just as crucial.

“’Yung defensive stop, ‘yun ‘yung nagpapanalo talaga sa amin,” said Racela.
