THE Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws matched their male counterparts’ feat by sweeping the first round of eliminations in UAAP Season 76.
The Lady Tamaraws beat the De La Salle Lady Archers, 70-49, on Sunday at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan for a 7-0 win-loss mark, extending their winning run to 25 games since their 2011 championship.
FEU drilled in five triples in the second period to pull away with a 36-16 lead at the 3:12 mark and never looked back.
Camille Sambile and Marites Albano combined for 33 points while Jack Tanaman and Vangie Soriano added 10 points apiece for FEU, whose men’s team also scored a first-round sweep.
Meanwhile, National University drew big games from Afril Bernardino and Kristine Abriam to turn back University of Santo Tomas, 81-69, and seize solo second with a 6-1 record.
The Lady Archers, who lost to the Lady Bulldogs last week, dropped to third spot with a 5-2 slate.
Adamson University routed Ateneo, 81-53, and University of the Philippines downed University of the East, 67-55, in the other women’s games.
Jinky Balasta registered 15 points and six assists, while Joy Cochico and Shellyn Bilbao chipped in 12 markers each for the Lady Falcons, who tied the Tigresses and the Lady Maroons in fourth place at 3-4.
Karen Salapong had a double-double of 21 markers and 11 rebounds for UP.
The Lady Warriors and the Lady Eagles fell to 1-6 and 0-7 records, respectively.
The National University Bullpups, meanwhile, nipped titleholder Far Eastern University-Diliman Baby Tamaraws, 79-76, to also complete a first-round sweep in juniors basketball on Saturday.
Jonas Go calmly buried two free throws with 5.5 seconds left as the Bullpups won their seventh straight game. John Cauilan topscored for NU with 19 points, while Mark Dyke had a double-double with 18 points and 20 rebounds.
JJ Domingo and David Completo combined for 30 points for the Baby Tams, who dropped to fourth place with a 4-3 card.
Aaron Black had 19 points, while Michael Nieto chipped in 14 markers as the Ateneo Blue Eaglets downed the UST Tiger Cubs, 75-69, to share second place with the La Salle-Zobel Junior Archers with a 5-2 record.
The University of the East Junior Warriors slipped past the Adamson Baby Falcons, 58-52, to tie the Tiger Cubs at 3-4 in fifth spot.
