LA Salle is on track for a second straight Philippine Collegiate Champions League crown after sweeping four of its games but San Beda tries to stop the run and steal the show as the Green Archers and Red Lions begin their title showdown on Thursday at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.
Game One of the best-of-three series is set at 4 p.m.
The Archers swept their matches in the Elite Eight after going through the Luzon-Metro Manila qualifiers.
La Salle eyes a follow-up to its 2013 triumph when it defeated Southwestern University, and try to become the third team to win two straight PCCL titles after Far Eastern University (2003-2004) and Ateneo (2009-2010).
More than going for the back-to-back, La Salle coach Juno Sauler admitted he also wants to give his players balanced minutes in preparation for the UAAP season with the Green Archers trying to ease Ben Mbala, Josh Torralba, Daryl Pascual, and Larry Muyang into the rotation.
“Hopefully, we could give a lot of minutes to everybody. That’s my priority,” said Sauler.
San Beda, meanwhile, looks to become only the second NCAA team to win the PCCL following San Sebastian’s triumph in 2011.
The Red Lions have an impressive mark of 3-1 in the Elite Eight and once again battle the Green Archers after losing to the Taft-based squad in the Filoil preseason title match.
University of San Carlos and University of Visayas, meanwhile, clash in an all-Cebu battle-for-third knockout game set at 2 p.m.
USC had an impressive outing in the PCCL Elite Eight with a 3-1 win-loss slate but was relegated to the battle-for-third by virtue of the Lions’ win over the Warriors in Cebu.
UV (2-2) also made it to the bronze medal match when Far Eastern University failed to come up with the required point margin against National University.
