LA REVILLA put De La Salle on the cusp of a finals berth, converting six triples to lift the Green Archers to a 74-69 victory over Far Eastern University on Saturday in the UAAP Season 76 men’s basketball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena.
The pint-sized guard scored 20 points, hitting several huge triples in the first half. None was bigger, however, than when he buried a trey from the left corner in the final minute of the game to dampen any comeback hopes for the Tamaraws.
The Green Archers formally clinched the No. 2 spot and a twice-to-beat advantage in the Final Four, one win away from a return to the finals after five years.
La Salle also limited Terrence Romeo, the FEU main man scoring only three points by halftime. The Season 76 Most Valuable Player went on to finish with 22 points but only shot 6-of-21 from the field.
The anemic shooting by Romeo was in stark contrast to La Salle’s, the Archers shooting 11 out of 32 triples in the game.
“We just worked on it this last week. We knew that we can get those shots,” said La Salle coach Juno Sauler. “We were just fortunate that we were able to hit our open shots.”
“We just want to limit the shots that he takes,” Sauler said on the team’s defense on Romeo. “He does take shots, we just want to challenge it. You’ll never know because once in a while, he starts making it.”
La Salle, which has won eight straight games from the start of the second round, meets FEU again on Wednesday at the Mall of Asia Arena where the Green Archers hope to gain a finals berth for the first time since 2008, when they lost to Ateneo.
The Green Archers got the groove shooting from the outside in the first half as back-to-back triples by Revilla and Matt Salem in the second period gave them a 37-27 lead entering the third.
Revilla continued to heat up with back-to-back triples in the third for a 45-32 advantage
FEU threatened in the fourth and moved within five points, but Revilla fired the biggest triple of the game, hitting the open shot from the left corner with 55.1 seconds to play to put the Green Archers up, 71-63.
Jason Perkins had 14 points, while Jeron Teng added 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Archers.
RR Garcia was the only other double-digit scorer for the Tamaraws with 22 points.
