'King Eagle' Kiefer Ravena puts a lock on first UAAP men's basketball MVP award

    Sep 14, 2014

KIEFER Ravena is set to receive his first ever UAAP men’s basketball tournament Most Valuable Player award.

According to an unofficial computation by based on statistics, Ravena won the league’s highest individual honor in runaway fashion after the Ateneo Blue Eagles star accumulated 77.6429 statistical points (SPs) after 14 games in the elimination round.

Jeron Teng of De La Salle, considered Ravena’s  closest rival for the award, came in a far second after totaling 67.8571 SPs.

Barring any major superlative performance from other players still seeing action on the final playing day of Season 77 on Tuesday, Ravena is expected to romp away with the MVP trophy to be handed out during the Finals after averaging 21.2 points, 5.9 rebounds, 5.6 assists, and 1.5 steals per outing.

Official statistics is the sole basis for determining the MVP, with the college league doing away with the old practice of considering votes from fellow players and media.

The MVP award is another high point in what should be a season to remember for Ravena, who came back strong after battling a series of injuries last year when the Blue Eagles missed out on the Final Four following a run of five successive championships.

He scored a career-high 38 points for Ateneo in a first-round victory over University of the East, while leading his team in clinching the No. 1 seed after missing out on the Final Four last year.

Ravena capped the eliminations by scoring 23 points as he helped the Blue Eagles come back from a 19-point deficit to beat Far Eastern University in overtime on Saturday, 68-64.

In a previous interview, Ravena said he is not concerned at all about the MVP crown, but is more determined to help the Blue Eagles regain the championship.

“If it happens, it happens,” he said.
