Ateneo star Kiefer Ravena taken to hospital due to dehydration after 'intense' Gilas cadet practice

    Apr 8, 2015

KIEFER Ravena missed the Ateneo Blue Eagles' game in an invitational tournament on Wednesday after suffering from dehydration, most likely after an 'intense' practice with the Gilas cadet pool.

Kiefer’s father, Bong Ravena, confirmed the reigning UAAP MVP was taken to the hospital after being dehydrated on Tuesday but was released immediately.

The elder Ravena added his son was advised to rest but will most likely be back in top shape as early as Thursday.

Ravena wasn’t at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan when the Blue Eagles bowed to the Arellano Chiefs, 72-68, in the 1st Philippine-Australia Goodwill Basketball Invitational on Wednesday.

Sources said regular practices with the Gilas cadet pool played a part in Ravena being dehydrated, describing the non-stop, two-hour sessions with head coach Tab Baldwin as “intense.”

Incidentally, another member of the national pool, Jiovanni Jalalon, is also not playing for Arellano but his absence has the blessing of his head coach Jerry Codiñera.

Codiñera said he wants Jalalon, a surprise pick for the 16-man pool selected by Baldwin, to concentrate on his national team duties so that he can preserve his energy during practices.

“Ubos ang guwardya ko kasi wala si Jalalon. Dehydrated si Kiefer kaya hindi ko na rin pinalaro si Jalalon. Siyempre, priority ang national team,” said Codiñera.

The Gilas cadets are in the thick of preparations for the Southeast Asian Basketball Association (Seaba) championship this month and the Southeast Asian Games in June, both in Singapore.
