KIEFER Ravena played down the need for offensive help from his teammates after Ateneo opened its UAAP Season 78 campaign with a disappointing 88-64 loss to Far Eastern University on Sunday.
The Blue Eagles star poured in 25 points on 7-of-18 shooting, along with six assists, five boards in 34 minutes as he ended up as one of only two Eagles who scored in twin digits, the other being Gwayne Capacio.
“I’m not requesting (help) because I know they can,” Ravena said after the game. “I’m pretty sure that when it counts the most, they’ll be there for me.”
But Eagles coach Bo Perasol feels otherwise.
“We have to get some more from the others,” he admitted, particularly mentioning senior wingman Von Pessumal.
“I need to get some production from the guards like Von kasi hindi kaya mag-isa ni Kiefer yan,” Perasol said. “Alam naman namin lahat yan.”
Pessumal contributed nine points, but five came during garbage time in the fourth quarter as he wound up making only three of his 12 shots.
Jerie Pingoy was also a non-factor as the former UAAP juniors MVP from FEU failed to live up to the hype in his long-awaited seniors debut, going scoreless after missing all his six shots in 21 minutes.
“We’re a young team and we got a long way to go,” Ravena said. “We’re just backing up each other. Laban lang.”
