Injured Kevin Ferrer won't rush his return to action with Tigers already out of semifinal race

    Sep 8, 2014

WITH the UST Tigers out of the Final Four picture, Kevin Ferrer will be sitting out the Tigers’ last two games in the elimination round to allow his injured left hand to heal.

Ferrer also said he has decided not to play because his teammates are starting to blend well without him.

The UST star has not seen action since fracturing his left hand during practice more than two weeks ago, although he vowed to return and try to help the Tigers claw their way back to the top half of the standings.

But now the Tigers, with a 5-7 win-loss record, are out of the race.

“Parang hindi rin naman ako makakatulong kapag pinilit ko. Mas okay na sila na kasi sanay na sila na wala ako. Baka kapag bumalik pa ako, mag-iba na naman. Willing din naman ako mag-sacrifice,” said Ferrer.

UST rookie coach Bong Dela Cruz said it’s Ferrer’s call whether he will play or not. “Depende na kay Kevin ’yun,” he said.

A member of Sinag Pilipinas in the Southeast Asian Games last year, Ferrer has played only eight games for the Tigers this year, averaging 9.6 points and 5.3 rebounds per outing.

After two straight finals appearances, UST will miss the Final Four for the first time since 2010, but Ferrer noted that the Tigers still want to post a decent finish and earn points in the race for the UAAP general championship.

“Kailangan din namin mag-contribute sa overall championship,” said Ferrer.

Ferrer admitted it has been hard for him to sit on the bench and not be able to contribute.

“Sobrang gigil ako. Gusto kong makatulong. Sana ako na lang ang naglalaro para manalo ’yung team at makaka-contribute. Nanghihinayang talaga ako,” Ferrer said.
