KENT Lao buried the second of his two free throws with 1.1 seconds left, lifting University of Santo Tomas to a hard-earned 50-49 win over Adamson on Saturday in the UAAP Season 77 men’s basketball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Lao actualy took four free throws inside the final 30.7 seconds and missed the first three, but the last one proved enough to spare UST blushes against a winless Adamson side that had the lead up until the final minutes.
UST coach Bong Dela Cruz, however, was far from satisfied with the win, the Tigers' second in a row.
“Tentative ‘yung mga bata. Hindi ko alam kung anong nangyari,” said Dela Cruz after a low-scoring game that saw both teams make just three field goals in the fourth quarter and make just 28 percent of their shots.
It was a disappointing loss for the Falcons (0-3), who despite missing the suspended Don Trollan built a 42-33 lead in the third quarter only to fade in the end.
Trollano missed Saturday’s game after an automatic one-game suspension for a disqualifying foul he committed against University of the East in their last game.
Adamson last held the lead at 49-45 on a Matthew Aquino field goal but Kevin Ferrer made two charities to tie the game with 1:57 remaining.
The Falcons actually had the chance to go for the game-winner but Jansen Rios couldn't hold on to the leather after collaring the rebound off a Karim Abdul miss, allowing Lao to get to the foul line.
Adamson coach Kenneth Duremdes also designed an alley-oop play in the final 1.1 seconds that was executed well. However, Rios found himself too deep under the basket and missed a desperation undergoal stab.
Louie Vigil scored 11 points to lead the Tigers while Kevin Ferrer added 10.
