Now eligible after two-year residency, Phoenix College's Sargent aching to secure spot in La Salle lineup

AFTER two long years of residency and playing for the training team, La Salle swingman Julian Sargent gets a chance to battle for a spot in the Green Archers line-up this season.

Now eligible to play in the UAAP, the 6-foot-3 player from Arizona looks likely to be part of La Salle’s rotation come Season 77, getting a lot of playing time from the La Salle coaching staff led by Juno Sauler in Green Archers tune-up games.

“He is quick and has a good three-point shot. He plays very mature,” said Sauler.

Still, Sargent says he doesn’t considering himself a sure pick for the Archers rotation.

“Just my playmaking ability and giving my team some open looks. Whatever coach Juno wants, I’ll do it so that I could play. Whatever he needs me to do, I’m for it 100 percent,” said Sargent, who first played for Mapua’s training team before moving to De La Salle.

Prior to his stint in the Philippines, Sargent, born to a Filipina mother in Arizona, suited up for Cactus Height in high school and was once named Player of the Year. He also played college ball for Phoenix College, a National Junior College Athletic Association Division II school.

Sargent said he wanted to explore other options in choosing to play in the Philippines.

“I want to do something different. Not too many people can say that they traveled the world, study, and play basketball. So I decided to come here,” said Sargent.

Sargent is part of a promising batch of first-year players, including Terrence Mustre, Abu Tratter, and Prince Rivero, looking to make the team’s UAAP line-up.

Sargent is now itching to see action after watching from the spectator stands as the Archers claimed a UAAP crown.

“It was hard. I can only cheer for my team,” said Sargent. “It was really hard that I can’t do anything. Now, I have my chance to help my team.”
