Jarencio handed 'strong reprimand' but escapes sanction for ref rant

    Oct 8, 2012

UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas coach Pido Jarencio was given a strong reprimand but escaped sanction, at least on the part of the UAAP Commissioner’s Office side, for his tirade against referees after Game One of the finals against Ateneo.

“On my end, strong reprimand,” said basketball commissioner Ato Badolato on Monday in an official statement.

However, Jarencio faces a separate probe by the league board for allegations that he pushed a referee while railing against a non-call late in the UST Tigers' 78-83 loss to Ateneo on Saturday.

UAAP secretary treasurer Junel Baculi has said that the alleged "physical contact" with the referee, which unlike rants against officiating merits penalties under the league's by-laws, will be taken up when the board holds its regular monthly meeting on Wednesday.

Jarencio had complained furiously to game officials due to, in his eyes, uneven calls that favored the Eagles during the opener of the best-of-three championship series. Game Two is set on Thursday.

He cited several incidents, including a disqualifying fifth foul on Karim Abdul with 30 seconds to play in the game and the foul trouble of UST defender Kevin Ferrer.

The outspoken coach also said a foul should have also been called on Ryan Buenafe on Jeric Teng at the buzzer which he said should have been led to three UST free throws.

“Manipis ang tawag, ang kakapal ng mukha,” was how he described the officiating in the game.
