Jansen Rios blames self for loss but coach Duremdes quick to defend veteran Adamson gunner

    Jul 26, 2014

JANSEN Rios was quick to blame himself for Adamson’s sorry loss to University of Santo Tomas after a costly turnover and a foul to boot in the crucial part of their UAAP men’s basketball game led to the Falcons suffering their third straight loss.

With the game tied at 49, Rios committed a turnover at the backcourt after being triple-teamed by UST defenders.

And to make matters worse, the Adamson player fouled Kent Lao to send the UST power forward to the line with 1.1 seconds left to play. Lao split his free throw but enough to let the Tigers escaped with a 50-49 win.

Rios had a chance to atone himself in Adamson’s final play. But an inbound alley-oop pass intended to him was too deep to score the game-winning basket.

The Adamson stalwart later took responsibility for the loss as the Falcons failed to protect a nine-point lead to remain winless in the tournament.

“Siyempre na-frustrate ako. Iniiisp ko  beterano ako eh, gusto ko mag-take charge,” Rios said.

In recalling the play, Rios said: “Na-rebound ko, tatlo bumabantay sa akin. Akala ko foul sila, ‘yun pala good play. Tapos drop-pass kay Lao, na-frustrate ako kaya na-foul ko,” he said.

However, Adamson coach Kenneth Duremdes defended Rios as he was not to blame for the defeat.

While he admitted the error committed by the veteran was costly, Duremdes said Adamson had an earlier mistake of giving up too many offensive rebounds in the game.

“Although he got the rebound, being the veteran, he should know what to do. Pero hindi naman (natalo) dahil kay Jansen. Nung una pa lang, another possession ang binigay namin sa UST. Hindi dadating ‘yung kay Jansen kung na-secure namin ‘yung rebound,” said Duremdes.

“May nangyari right before that so again, ang masakit lang, naulit ‘yung offensive rebound.”

Rios, who finished with six points but grabbed 10 rebounds, said the loss is definitely a learning experience for him and the Falcons.

“Learn from mistakes,” said Rios, who’s playing in his final year with Adamson. “Siguro work hard lang and focus, motivate sa mga rookies at maging responsible as a veteran.”
