HUBERT Cani joined the Ateneo Blue Eagles in a pocket tournament in Iloilo this week, but his father made it clear his son has yet to make an official commitment to any schools in college.
The high school star out of National University suited up for the Blue Eagles in the first game of the President’s Cup at the University of San Agustin gym opposite College of Saint Benilde on Thursday.
Hubert's father Jon-Jon confirmed to Spin.ph his son had indeed played for the team in the pocket tournament which is part of the Blue Eagles’ preparation for the upcoming UAAP season.
The elder Cani, however, insisted nothing is official as to where his basketball star son is headed.
“Kasama siya pero wala pang commitment,” said Jon-Jon of his son who won the Finals MVP award during the Bullpups’ conquest of the Blue Eaglets in the last UAAP juniors finals.
Unlike his high school batchmates who have mostly picked their college teams, Cani has yet to make a commitment to any school with several preseason tournaments fast approaching.
While his family earlier admitted he is interested in joining Ateneo in college, the young Cani has also drawn interest from the Eagles’ longtime rival and UAAP reigning champion De La Salle.
But Cani's case is complicated as he is covered by the controversial UAAP residency rule that will require him to sit out two seasons before he finally gets to play if ever he transfers to Ateneo or any schools, unless he gets a release from NU itself.
He will, however, be able to play in the upcoming Season 77 if he stays with the Bulldogs.
