HUBERT Cani waited a long time for a chance to suit up for the Ateneo Blue Eagles in the UAAP.
Sources now say his Ateneo stint may prove a short one.
According to sources, the Ateneo guard has been unhappy in his first playing season with the team in the UAAP men's basketball tournament and is looking at the possibility of moving out of the Blue Eagles' nest.
“Hindi happy yung bata pati yung erpat (dad Jon-jon Cani) sa playing time ni Hubert. Natatakot sila na baka maburo lang dun yung bata hanggang sa mawala ang laro,” said the source who requested anonymity.
Cani is a former Finals MVP in the UAAP juniors tournament with the National University Bullpups who spent one year of residency when he decided to move to the Katipunan school.
The point guard also needed a last-minute decision by the UAAP board to be able to suit up this season under the Student Athletes' Protection Act which forbids residency for high school players transferring to another member school for college.
Cani's rookie season with Ateneo has largely been uneventful, averaging just 6:30 minutes of playing time and while being relegated to a back-up role behind Matt Nieto even with another transferee, Jerie Pingoy, out injured.
Another source bared one of the teams interested in Cani is Ateneo rival De La Salle, which is in need of a true point guard with top recruit Kib Montalbo hit by injuries.
Sought for comment, Ateneo team manager Epok Quimpo admitted that he, too, has heard talk of Cani supposedly looking to move after the season.
“Aware ako dyan. Nuong isang araw (Monday) ko pa nalaman at naamoy 'yun (move of the Cani camp). May mga nakita rin akong pictures,” Quimpo, a former Ateneo guard, said without elaborating.
Asked if the school will intervene on the matter, Quimpo said: “Bakit naman namin sila pipigilan kung ganun ang gusto nila? Mukha ba akong pumipigil ng player? Hindi kami ganun sa Ateneo.”
