HUBERT Cani has been allowed by the UAAP to play for the coming Season 78, league officials told Spin.ph on Tuesday following its board meeting.
Ateneo representative to the UAAP board Ricky Palou confirmed to Spin.ph in an SMS message that the former National University junior standout has been cleared to play for the new season that officially kicks off this Saturday following the passage into law of the Student-Athletes Protection Act.
The decision ended the long wait for Cani, who was initially set to sit out Season 78 of the league following a ruling by the UAAP board that he still falls under the league’s two-year residency rule for high school graduates moving to a different UAAP college.
Cani moved from NU to Ateneo before the start of the 2014 season.
The UAAP made the initial ruling despite the passing of the then-Student-Athletes Protection Bill authored by Sen. Pia Cayetano.
The bill was eventually signed into law by President Aquino, raising hope the former NU stalwart will be able to play this season.
Sources told Spin.ph the filing of a Temporary Restraining Order (TRO) was the next step for Ateneo had the UAAP stuck with its previous decision for Cani to sit out the season.
