HANNAH Dato of Ateneo, Janelle May Frayna of Far Eastern University, and Ian Lariba of De La Salle were named co-Athletes of the Year award for Season 77 of the UAAP, which came to a formal close on Saturday night at the University of the East Theater.
Dato, Frayna, and Lariba were bestowed the honor after running away with the Most Valuable Player awards in their respective events and winning medals in international competitions.
Dato, a former Palarong Pambansa standout, won three gold medals in swimming for the Philippine team in last December’s Asean University Games while helping the Lady Eagles win their second straight UAAP title.
Frayna, a Women’s International Master (WIM), competed in the World Juniors Chess Championship in India last October and helped the Lady Tamaraws end the four-year reign of La Salle in the collegiate league.
Lariba led La Salle to the women’s table tennis crown this season and also donned the country’s colors in the Asean University Games.
Frayna and Lariba attended the simple closing rite, while Dato failed to make it as he is currently seeing action in a competition.
During the ceremony, the league also honored student-athletes who excelled in academics such as badminton player Mikaela Aquino of Adamson, swimmer Axel Ngui of Ateneo, table tennis player Jerald Cristobal of La Salle, volleyball libero Tin Agno of FEU, cager Kristine Abriam of National University, fencer Nathaniel Perez of UE, poomsae artist Dustin Mella of University of the Philippines, and trackster Eloisa Luzon of UST.
All Most Valuable Player and Rookie of the Year awardees were also honored during the event.
Outgoing UAAP president Carmelita Mateo of UE handed the symbolic league flag to UP chancellor Dr. Michael Tan in a ceremonial turnover as the state-run university will host Season 78 slated to start on September 5.
