Game One was fairly officiated, says chief

    Oct 9, 2012

UAAP basketball commissioner Ato Badolato sees nothing wrong with the officiating in Game One of the finals between Ateneo and University of Santo Tomas despite the controversy that marred the opener of the best-of-three series.

“It was a fairly officiated game. I have no complaints about it,” said Badolato in Tuesday’s Philippine Sportswriters Association Forum at Shakey’s Malate.

The commissioner’s statements  came following the outburst of UST coach Pido Jarencio about the unfair officiating in Game 1 which the Tigers lost, 78-83.

Badolato thought otherwise as he stood by the three referees from the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) who officiated the match.

“I really don’t know what complaints coach Pido has been making, but as far as we are concerned the referees performed a creditable job during that game,” said Badolato, a former multi-titled coach with the San Beda Red Cubs.

The commissioner assured the quality of officiating is being addressed by the league ever since the beginning of the tournament. He even intimated they have been sanctioning referees during the whole duration of the meet.

“We will be doing our utmost best to make it a trouble-free Game Two and, if needed, Game Three. Konting pasensya lang. If there are some lapses, we will not tolerate the lapses and problems,” said Badolato.

To ensure that officiating will be at its best, Badolato said that 17 referees have been handpicked from the pool of 40 to officiate the championship series in the seniors, juniors, and women’s finals.

Badolato said he doesn’t mind seeing coaches complain to officials, which has become a common sight in the league all season.

“One official told me that kapag hindi nagreklamo, hindi normal. Coaches will complain. It’s just the way they complain,” said Badolato.

“I understand. They are under tremendous pressure,” said the commissioner.
