    Apr 16, 2014

FORMER University of the East men’s basketball team manager Dr. Jesus Tanchanco Sr. passed away on Monday due to cardiac arrest. He was 83.

Tanchanco, who is also UE’s marketing director, died at UE Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Medical Center at 12:40 p.m.

His remains lie in state at Funeraria Paz, Araneta Avenue, Quezon City, according to Leo Gaviola of the UE marketing office. Gaviola also said that the UE community is offering a mass to Tanchanco on Wednesday night.

Tanchanco was the Red Warriors’ team manager for two seasons before UE executive vice president Carmelita Mateo took over this year.

Tanchanco was a TOYM (Ten Outstanding Young Men) awardee in 1965 and a former minister of the National Food Authority (NFA) during the Marcos regime.

Last year, Tanchanco called for reforms in the UAAP, saying that ‘hatred’ among member schools should end.

“I hope that the UAAP can do some more reforms to that instead of developing hatred among different players, we also have to show love in the UAAP,” said Tanchanco.

“UAAP is there for us to be closer together and sportsmanship should be the main objective,” he added.
