Former King Warrior Yap to lend a hand in UE buildup for UAAP campaign

    May 21, 2013

JAMES Yap will give his alma mater a helping hand when he visits practices of the University of the East men’s basketball team during its buildup for the coming UAAP season.

Coach Boyzie Zamar confirmed San Mig Coffee superstar and former King Warrior is scheduled to show up in team practices once he finishes his other commitments outside of basketball.

Zamar said he hopes Yap’s visit will help motivate the new-look Red Warriors for the coming UAAP run.

At the same time, he said he’s also inviting other Red Warrior alumni to also attend their practices in order to prop up the spirit of the team.

“’Yung mga lessons na binibigay natin sa mga bata dito, mga practical lessons,” Zamar told “They (Yap and Company) are a living testimony.”

“They will not only give talks but they will join practices, magbibigay ng tips,” added the UE coach.

Yap played under Zamar during his time with the school, which he steered to a Final Four stint in the 2002 season, when the Warriors lost to eventual champion Ateneo Blue Eagles.

Zamar also disclosed Marc Pingris, a teammate of Yap at San Mig Coffee, will be appearing, too, in one of UE’s practices even though he is not an alumnus of the school.

Prior to becoming a big name in the PBA, Pingris also played for Zamar when he was still calling the shots for Philippine School of Business Administration.

“Walang pumapansin sa kanya (Pingris) noon. ‘Yun ang mga lessons na gusto nating ibigay sa mga bata,” said Zamar.
