Streaking Tamaraws seek Final Four berth against winless Falcons

    Sep 2, 2014

FAR Eastern University seeks to formalize its entry into the Final Four on Wednesday as it faces struggling Adamson in Season 77 of the UAAP men’s basketball tournament at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

The Tamaraws (9-2) take on the winless Falcons (0-11) at 4 p.m.

Against the lowly Falcons, the Tamaraws are not about to take chances the way assistant coach Eric Gonzales saw them during their Saturday match against University of the Philippines where they needed to survive the Maroons in a closely-contested game, 75-69.

“Coming into the Adamson game, kapag hindi pa natuto ‘yung mga players, ewan ko na lang,” said Gonzales.

The FEU deputy coach said such kind of game by the team against Adamson concerns him the most as the Tamaraws seek to sweep all of their games in the absence of coach Nash Racela, who is currently in Spain as part of the Gilas Pilipinas coaching staff in the Fiba World Cup.

“Actually nung iniwan ako ni Nash, iniwan niya ako sa sitwasyon na mawawalan ako ng career,” said Gonzales in jest, referring to him taking over as acting coach during the time when FEU is up against league minnows.

The Falcons are actually improving as the season goes along based on their losing margin the past games. Adamson wasn’t blown away by reigning champion De La Salle, 57-66, over the weekend.

Gonzales said a win by the Tamaraws over the Falcons bode well to their campaign to claim the twice-to-beat advantage in the Final Four as they want nothing but a sweep of all their remaining games.

“Ayaw namin matalo ng isa kasi baka mag-triple tie eh. Gusto namin seeded sa top two. Kaya I keep on reminding the players na gawin natin laging stepping stone ‘yung bawat laro dahil baka mamaya matisod tayo. Ayaw namin maging stumbling block ‘yun,” said Gonzales.

After Adamson, FEU faces University of the East on Sunday before going up against Ateneo on September 13.
