FAR Eastern University leaned on a big third quarter to trounce University of the Philippines, 85-71, on Sunday in the UAAP Season 77 men's basketball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena.
The Tamaraws (2-1) outscored the Maroons, 25-8, in the ruthless third-quarter run to take a commanding 70-46 lead and all but put the wraps on their second victory of the season.
FEU, which led by as many as 26 points at one point in the match, got back to its winning ways after dropping their last game against University of Santo Tomas last week.
“We treated this game as a very important one especially coming off a loss,” FEU coach Nash Racela said. “I think the loss gave us a lot of lessons and those were the things that we worked on.
"As a team, we were still struggling but when we were able to correct those mistakes, it was a beauty.
UP (0-4) fell to its 25th straight loss to remain winless to start Season 77.
The Tamaraws actually opened the third with a 17-4 run to take control of the game, 62-42 - a stretch where they played what Racela said was near-perfect basketball.
“’Yung third quarter is really how the game should be played. Walang pinipilit, making the right decisions, and defending,” said Racela.
Mike Tolomia had 18 points, while Mark Belo had 12 points, and nine rebounds for the Tamaraws, who will next play University of the East on Wednesday.
The Maroons last held the lead, 16-14, in the first before the Tamaraws finished the quarter with a 14-5 blast to take the lead for good, 28-21.
JR Gallarza had 18 points to lead the Maroons, who shot 1-of-16 from the field in the third canto.
