Fate of Perasol, Atayde to be tackled in emergency board meeting

    Sep 3, 2013

THE UAAP board is expected to hand out a decision on whether Ateneo coach Bo Perasol and La Salle fan JJ Atayde will be sanctioned for their actions last Sunday at the end of a heated game between the longtime archrivals.

The board has scheduled an emergency board meeting on Wednesday where possible actions against either Perasol or Atayde, or both, after their spat at the end of La Salle's close win over Ateneo at the Smart Araneta Coliseum will be part of the agenda.

Perasol attempted to storm the stands to confront Atayde, who heckled him while the Ateneo coach was on his way to the dugout. (For full story, see Loyzaga won't sanction Perasol for spat with fan)

UAAP secretary treasurer Malou Isip said the board is taking a ‘wait-and-see’ approach since no one has formally issued a complaint against any of the parties involved.

“We will discuss it and ask for their comments on the issue,” Isip said.

The Perasol incident will be just one of many controversies the board will be tackling on what should be a long meeting. Also set to be discussed are two Temporary Restraining Orders (TRO) issued against the league on its residency rule and a decision to declare UP juniors player Jozhua General ineligible.

On Tuesday, the Quezon City Regional Trial Court favored first-year swimmer Anna Bartolome of the University of the Philippines by issuing a 20-day TRO on the league’s two-year residency requirement for high school graduates transferring from one member school to another.

The board is also expected to tackle the implications of a TRO on its decision to declare General ineligible which will lapse on September 5.

A few board members who are part of the UAAP technical committee will also act on University of the East’s appeal to downgrade the two-game suspension on Ralf Olivares meted by commissioner Chito Loyzaga.

The board is also set to make a decision on whether the Far Eastern University women’s basketball team will have their games forfeited after Vangie Soriano saw action in a commercial league while the season is ongoing.
