EX-LA Salle Green Archer Sam Marata is set to play for University of the Philippines next season after capturing the UAAP juniors MVP award with the same school six years ago.
UP head coach Ricky Dandan has confirmed that Marata will be suiting up for the Maroons after failing to make the Green Archers' roster in last season's UAAP wars.
“Marata is with us and he will play this coming UAAP,” said UP head coach Ricky Dandan, whose team is in need of a boost after finishing last season with a league-worst 1-13 (win-loss) record.
According to De La Salle’s school organ The LaSallian, Marata failed to make it in last season’s line-up due to academic problems but is trying to gain a fresh start with the Maroons.
Marata captured the MVP plum with UPIS in the UAAP - an award that raised eyebrows as the Junior Maroons only finished in seventh place that year.
Marata became a part of the Philippine youth team before deciding to join the Green Archers, who were then handled by national mentor Franz Pumaren.
He struggled with the Green Archers, playing only limited minutes during his third year with the team in 2011.
