Ed Daquioag waxes hot late as UST Tigers nip FEU Tamaraws for share of UAAP lead

    Sep 9, 2015

ED Daquiaog scored University of Santo Tomas’ final six points as the Tigers nipped Far Eastern University, 72-71, on Wednesday in the UAAP Season 78 men’s basketball tournament at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

Daquiaog closed the game with a bang, converting three lay-ups including a huge one with 1:36 left in the fourth to give the Tigers a 72-69 lead.

UST went on to protect its lead to win its second game in as many matches against one of the favored teams this season.

Daquiaog scored 12 of his 18 points in the final period, while the Tigers also got 13 points from Kevin Ferrer, who went 3-for-6 from the three-point line and added eight rebounds.

“The boys played very well today. ’Yung puso nila nandoon. They want to win. Hindi sila bumigay,” said UST coach Bong de la Cruz.

Karim Abdul had 12 points for the Tigers, who were ahead 34-28 at the half and led by 11 after making five straight points to begin the third period.

“Kami ’yung nag-dictate ng tempo, we played defense. ’Yun yung nakita namin last game. Walang depensa ‘yung kalaban nila. This time, we played defense the whole 40 minutes,” De la Cruz said.

FEU led, 67-66, after a putback by Raymar Jose with 3:39 left in the fourth before Daquioag pushed UST back in control.

After Russell Escoto pulled FEU to within a point, 71-72, Mac Belo lost possession of the ball in FEU’s final play and the Tamaraws fell to 1-1 following their impressive opening weekend victory over Ateneo.
