ATENEO extended its winning streak to four, building a big lead in the third quarter to beat Adamson, 79-66, on Saturday in the UAAP Season 76 men’s basketball tournament at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Kiefer Ravena and Ryan Buenafe each had 18 points for the streaking Blue Eagles, who continued their climb up the standings after a slow start as they improved to a 5-4 win-loss record.
The Blue Eagles went on a 24-6 run in the third period to lead by 57-32 entering the final canto and a spirited fourth-quarter binge by the Falcons sputtered in the end.
Ateneo coach Bo Perasol, however, was quick to shrug off the victory and the winning streak.
“I told the guys that it wasn’t just about winning because winning this game is not going to amount to anything if we are going to have to win the next game,” said Perasol.
The Falcons have lost five straight games for a 3-7 win-loss slate, seventh in the eight-team league.
Ingrid Sewa had 17 points while Jericho Cruz added 14 points. They combined for 22 of Adamson’s 34 points in the fourth.
After trailing 59-32, the Falcons came to within 63-55 on a Sewa slam with 4:43 in the fourth. But Ravena had back-to-back lay-ups to increase the lead again.
