UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas rookie Renzo Subido will not be part of the Growling Tigers’ lineup for Season 77.
UST coach Bong De la Cruz said Subido’s decision to join the Tigers came a bit too late after the De La Salle-Zobel high school star spent almost the whole summer deciding where to play college ball.
Spin.ph had earlier learned that Subido is already eligible to play for UST - and other UAAP teams for that matter - this season after being granted his release by his high school team De La Salle-Zobel.
Prior to the release, the high-scoring point guard was covered by the controversial two-year residency rule for high school graduates transferring from one UAAP school to another in college.
But as it turned out, Subido's decision to move to Espana came too late.
“Late na kasi siya dumating,” new UST coach De la Cruz explained when asked by Spin.ph about Subido’s status. “Hindi namin alam kung saan siya pupunta. Kung La Salle ba o UST.”
Subido’s family had previously dropped an earlier plan to move to UST by saying their son will be staying with La Salle, only to make another U-turn in recent weeks.
De la Cruz, however, assured that the current member of the Philippine Under-18 national team will definitely be part of UST’s pool for next year.
“Hindi na siya mala-lineup ngayon. Next year,” Dela Cruz said.
Subido earned his place in the Philippine U-18 team after averaging a league-best 20.1 points during his stint with the Junior Archers last year.
Rookies who are already part of the UST pool are Alfred Gayosa from San Sebastian and Gelo Sablan from University of the Philippines.
