SOUTHWESTERN University big man Ben Mbala clarified on Tuesday that he has not made a decision on whether to make the move and play college basketball in Manila.
In an interview with Spin.ph correspondent Jonas Panerio in Cebu, Mbala said that he is still thinking of whether or not to entertain offers he got from Manila teams after his impressive showing in the Philippine Collegiate Champions League last month.
Mbala said he had already talked with SWU athletic director Ryan Aznar and head coach Yayoy Alcoseba about the offers, but needs another month to make his mind.
“I’m still thinking about it,” Mbala said. “In around a month, I'll come up with a decision. I've talked with Ryan and coach Yayoy but the final decision will be up to me.”
Meanwhile, Alcoseba made it clear that Mbala is still with the Cobras, the team he led to the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) crown last year.
"As far as I know, Ben is still with us,” Alcoseba said.
SWU officials have said that they won’t hinder Mbala if he wants to play in Manila as long as the interested parties talked directly to the school.
But when asked if he will let Mbala go should he ask for his release, the fiery Alcoseba snapped: “No.”
Mbala confirmed approaches by UAAP arch-rivals De La Salle and Ateneo during the Cobras’ campaign in the PCCL where he averaged 27 points, 10.3 rebounds, and 3.7 blocks in games against UAAP champion Ateneo, NCAA titlist San Beda and eventual champion University of Santo Tomas.
“La Salle and Ateneo talked to me during the PCCL but after it, no more,” said Mbala.
