TWO members of a committee formed by University of the Philippines to spearhead the search for a new men’s basketball team coach said no official appointment has been made by the school as to who will take over the Maroons for Season 78.
UP men’s basketball team manager Dan Palami and UP athletic director Ariel Juliano said the school has not named its head coach, contrary to reports that Joe Ward has already been appointed as the Maroons mentor for the UAAP.
Ward is a former strength and conditioning coach of Barangay Ginebra who joined UP as early as last year in a similar capacity. Ward is now acting coach of the Maroons and is actually handling the team's campaign in the Filsports Basketball Association (FBA).
Palami admitted Ward is being considered as a head coach of the Maroons to replace Rey Madrid, but added there is no final decision by the school as to who will take over the men’s basketball program starting Season 78 of the UAAP.
“Nothing is final yet as to who the UP head coach will be,” said Palami, also the team manager of the Philippine Azkals.
Juliano added that an official announcement will come from either him, Palami or UP-Diliman Chancellor Michael Tan.
“There is no official announcement yet,” said Juliano. “Wala pong official announcement from the search committee or the Office of the Chancellor.”
But Juliano hinted an official announcement could be made after the Holy Week.
“Meron pa kaming mga meetings na ginagawa pero we might make an announcement after Holy Week,” Juliano said.
The Maroons hope to have a strong showing this year as they host Season 78 of the UAAP which will start on September 5.
