Coach E allays fears that NU is peaking too soon

    May 19, 2013

NATIONAL University isn’t worried that the team may be peaking too early following its sweep of the Filoil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup eliminations.

The Bulldogs have steamrolled through Group A, winning all their eight matches in the preliminaries. NU now has a streak of 19 straight victories in the preseason tournament dating back to last year’s run to the title.

After winning the preseason meet last year, the Bulldogs finished the UAAP eliminations in third place with a 9-5 win-loss record but missed the finals after losing to University of Santo Tomas in the semifinals.

NU coach Eric Altamirano stressed that he is not concerned with their pace going into the UAAP competition.

“We are not there yet,” said Altamirano. “Hindi pa kami nakapaglaro ng complete line-up.”

Altamirano, however, also considers the elims sweep as a feat for his Bulldogs.

“So far, with our record, we did a good job. But again in the quarterfinals and semifinals we will be playing the tough teams so we have to prepare for that,” Altamirano said.

While Bobby Ray Parks has been the leading man for the Bulldogs this season, Altamirano also credited his second unit for responding well with the heavy minutes given them. Three of the notable second stringers that have been playing well for the Bulldogs are Troy Rosario, Robin Rono, and Jayjay Alejandro.

“I’m proud of our second unit. I think they are stepping up this tournament. Most of the minutes are given to the second team,” said Altamirano.
