NATIONAL University intends to elevate the school's juniors star, Raphael Atangan, to its seniors lineup.
NU athletic director Junel Baculi said that the coaching staff led by Eric Altamirano intends to keep Atangan, who led the school to its first-ever UAAP high school crown two years ago.
“I don’t want to pre-empt the coach but because of his performance, I heard that they are considering Atangan,” said Baculi.
Atangan averaged 12.4 points, 7.8 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 1.3 steals, and a shade under a block per game in 2011, when he won the Finals MVP trophy by leading the Bullpups to the championship against the Jerie Pingoy-led Far Eastern University Baby Tamaraws.
Atangan also led the Bullpups back to the finals last season when they lost to the Baby Tamaraws.
Baculi said it is unclear if Atangan will be elevated straight to the seniors lineup as the Bullpups are still busy playing in a couple of offseason tournaments.
“May mga tournaments pa ang juniors team kaya by March pa siguro (mapa-finalize),” said Baculi.
The Bulldogs also have a couple of promising players awaiting promotion to the seniors squad, among them Alfred Aroga and Jay-J Alejandro, who sat out last year’s UAAP wars after a stint with the Philippine youth team.
Both have been impressive for the Bulldogs' Team B in offseason tournaments.
