ATENEO women’s volleyball team manager Tony Boy Liao said he prefers to see promising recruit Risa Sato suit up for National University in the UAAP under coach Roger Gorayeb.
Liao said it’s just proper the Filipino-Japanese middle blocker ends up playing for Gorayeb, the man credited for bringing Sato to Ateneo, where he served as coach from 2008-2013.
Sato though didn’t make it to the Katipunan-based squad after failing her entrance exam with the school.
A couple of weeks ago Gorayeb confirmed to Spin.ph Sato attended his training with the Lady Bulldogs - and Liao sees no problem with that.
“I would rather give her to NU,” Liao told Spin.ph.
“Sa NU kasi si coach Roger naman talaga ang una nilang nilapitan,” he added. “Maganda na sa NU siya mapunta kasi unfair naman kay Roger.”
Sato is now in the process of finalizing her papers to formally transfer to NU.
“Syempre kami naman bakit mo tatanggihan eh kung mapunta pa sa kalaban namin ‘yan ‘di ba?” said Gorayeb, who also handles the San Sebastian volleyball team.
“Ako masaya ako na unang niyang sinabihan,” added the veteran mentor. “Ako ang unang option niya after Ateneo. Actually naisip ko nga rin sa Baste kasi gusto ko ring palakasin ang Baste, kaya lang wala naman kaming team manager doon, dyan (sa NU) meron.”
Sato played for the national team under Gorayeb that competed in the Asian U-23 Women’s Championship last May.
