LA Salle stayed on top despite getting its vaunted attack limited in a 1-0 win over Far Eastern University in the UAAP Season 79 women’s football tournament on Saturday at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
Kyla Inquig scored the winning goal off a set piece, connecting well with midfielder Irish Navaja for the lone goal of the day for the Lady Archers.
It wasn't quite the dominant performance that the Lady Archers are so used to - especially after producing a total of nine goals in the past two games. But La Salle gladly settled for three points as they completed a four game sweep of the first round and moved three points clear of their closest pursuer, University of Santo Tomas.
The Lady Tamaraws, on the other hand, finished the first round with just a solitary point after absorbing yet another heartbreaker. It was the third defeat that could have gone either way for FEU, losing by just a single goal in all of their defeats.
In the second game, Charisa Lemoran bagged a hat-trick to lead UST to a 3-2 victory over Ateneo.
The victory pushed the Tigresses to second place with nine points, just three behind league leader La Salle.
Lemoran quickly opened the scoring for the Tigresses in the second minute before negating Tessa Bernardo's 26th minute goal by scoring in the 35th and 55th minute.
Cam Rodriguez pulled one back for the Lady Eagles in the 69th minute but they never recovered from Lemoran's outburst as they finished the first round with six points.
Meantime, men's action resume on Sunday at the Rizal Memorial Stadium as league leading Ateneo (19 pts) takes on third seeded University of the Philippines (14 pts) in the main game while second seeded FEU (15 pts) takes on the surging National University (7 pts) in the curtain raiser at 3 p.m.
