UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas survived a late rally from Far Eastern University and held on to a 2-1 win in the UAAP Season 79 women's football tournament on Saturday at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
The Lady Booters squeezed past the Lady Tamaraws and got all three points, thanks to second half goals from Hazel Lustan ('56) Charisa Lemoran ('61), and the late heroics of goalkeeper Nicole Reyes.
"Sobrang saya dahil nag pay-off yung effort namin sa training. Nakita ko yung plays ng second half, okay lang," said UST head coach Pricilia Rubio.
"Experience wise, masyadong bata pa yung mga players ko. Medyo poor pa kami dun kaya nagulat sila at nag-panic kasi wala pang gaanong experience late," she added.
After an uneventful first half, the Lady Booters roared out of the gates, playing more aggressive than what they showed in the first 45 minutes.
They were rewarded quickly by amazing goals from Lustan and Lemoran, but just when they thought they were going for a breezy win, the Lady Tamaraws came back charging.
A free kick by Jovelle Sudaria in the 77th minute pumped life back to the Tams.
FEU had a chance to at least save a point in the match when a handball infraction in the box was called on UST.
That's where Reyes stepped up to the plate as she denied Sudaria of a brace, and FEU of a point, in what was definitely the play of the game.
UST gets two weeks to celebrate the win as it won't be playing until its Feb.25 match against La Salle.
