UNIVERSITY of the Philippines reclaimed the throne in the UAAP football tournament after squeezing past a game University of Santo Tomas side, 1-0, on Thursday at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
A spectacular goal from team skipper Ian Clarino in the 21st minute proved to be the difference for the Fighting Maroons.
JB Borlongan curled a free kick over a wall and Clarino sent the ball past tournament best ‘keeper Zaldy Abraham, who otherwise had another terrific game in between goal.
The Fighting Maroons pretty much controlled the whole match, forcing Abraham to save after save as Clarino, Borlongan and Kintaro Miyagi continued to run through the UST defense.
The Tigers had sparse chances of equalizing, their best coming late when Dexter Benecio nearly finished off a cross before being denied by UP’s Anton Yared.
The Fighting Maroons kept the pressure on until the final whistle as they wrapped up their dominant season with their fifth title and their second in three years.
Clarino was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament while also bagging the best defender award. UP Fidel Tacardon was named the Rookie of the Year.
Ateneo goal machine Jarvey Gayoso was the best striker, La Salle’s Darius Diamante was named the best midfielder and the Green Booters received the fair play award.
