LOYOLA Meralco bucked an early defensive lapse to trounce Green Archers United, 4-1, and finish in third place in the United Football League Cup at the Rizal Memorial Stadium on Monday night.
Finding themselves in an early 1-0 hole after the Archers’ Ayi Aryee scored just 10 minutes into the match, the Sparks retaliated four minutes later courtesy of Mark Hartmann and sustained their aggressiveness on attack for the rest of the match to take the fight out of the Archers.
Hartmann finished with a brace, while Byeong Yeol Jeong and Phil Younghusband struck for a goal apiece for the Sparks, who won despite missing the services of James Younghusband, who was suspended after he accumulated two yellow cards in the semifinal loss to Global.
“They got to score first, but we had the four goals. That’s what matters,” Hartmann told Spin.ph after the game.
“We finished third so it’s not the best season. But we won our last game so the momentum into the next year should be good,” added the Filipino-British striker, whose team enters League play in January as the second runner-up.
Younghusband, who scored in the 62nd minute on an empty goal, increased his goal total to 10 this season, making the prominent national team mainstay the frontrunner to win the Cup’s Golden Boot award.
